Helmers’ Restaurant Still A Success After 70 Years In Business

Helmers’ Restaurant is one of the oldest restaurants in Hoboken, and the old school, homegrown style of their authentic German food is what has kept them thriving at 11th and Washington for so long.

Helmers’ has been around since 1936 and family-run by the Lueders family since the ‘40s. Current owner Greg has maintained the philosophy of, “If we can’t make it from scratch, we don’t make it.”

Greg and his family believe that the small details make a big impact, which is why they take the time to hand-squeeze oranges for your glass of orange juice or mimosa.

One of their most popular dishes–the sauerbraten–takes four days to make, but it is well worth the effort when a customer admires the tenderness of the final result. The dish is pot roast soaked in a vinegar solution, sliced thin and drizzled with brown vinegar gravy and served with a dumpling and red cabbage, all for just $19. The potato pancakes and schnitzels are never disappointing either.

But what’s a good meal without something to wash it down with, right? Helmer’s has 16 beers on draft and a large outdoor dining area for you to soak in the sun while you eat.

If you’re looking for healthier meals, Helmers' still has you covered with their new extensive salad and seafood options

Check out everything they have to offer here.
