Earth Day 2016: Local Ways to Get Involved

Friday, April 22nd will mark the 46th year of the movement we know as Earth Day. Matters such as climate change, pollution, and deforestation are just some examples of how we can have a negative impact on our planet. However, if you’re looking to create some change, there are plenty of ways in which you can help locally. Activities such as tree planting, picking up trash, and recycling are all simple and easy steps you can take towards improving our planet. If you’re looking to join the movement, there are also opportunities to volunteer, donate, or even spread the word via social media.

In celebration and support of Earth Day, Liberty State Park in Jersey City will be hosting a day full of fun events on Saturday, April 23rd. From 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. there will be face painting, games, and exhibits for kids. If you’re an early riser, you can participate in planting for Nature’s Path at 9 a.m. or take part in the 5k run at 10 a.m. in support of this year’s theme, “Protecting Our Waterways.” This day of events is put together by the Hudson County Improvement Authority (HCIA) who are responsible for the Hudson County Earth Day celebration every year.

If you’re looking for something more hands-on, the first Great Jersey City Clean Up will also take place this Saturday. From 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. volunteers will aid in the preservation and restoration of a city and the event will be brought to you by Keep Jersey City Beautiful. The Jersey City Earth Day Festival will be held on the same day from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. at City Hall, offering attendees educational workshops, food from local food trucks, and complimentary yoga and massage sessions by local businesses.

And don’t forget, although Earth Day is an annual holiday, we should be practicing an eco-friendly lifestyle year-round!
