Murphy Announces $7.5M in Grants to Make Streets Safer for Pedestrians Near Transit
New Jersey is investing $7.45 million in pedestrian safety near transit in Fiscal Year 2026. Governor Phil Murphy announced grants for 12 projects across seven counties to enhance sidewalks, crosswalks, and accessibility near bus stops and rail stations. The Safe Streets to Transit (SSTT) program encourages walking to transit stations while improving safety for pedestrians, especially vulnerable populations. Funding is awarded competitively based on proximity to transit, safety needs, and equity criteria to benefit low-income and minority communities. NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor highlighted the program’s focus on protecting pedestrians and mobility-impaired residents. This year’s funding includes traditional SSTT funds, additional Grants-in-Aid, and Pedestrian Safety Grants, totaling $7.45 million—up from the usual $1 million. Projects supported by the program allow local governments to improve streets without burdening taxpayers, ensuring safer commutes for residents.
