WORD Bookstore in Jersey City is always striving to make the bookstore an exciting place to be. WORD’s stellar events give book lovers opportunities to meet and learn from fascinating people, whether they’re famous writers or members of the community. Every month has been packed with great events, and May is no different.


Wednesday, May 7, 7:30 p.m.

James Fearnley in conversation with Vol.1 Brooklyn

Join WORD and Vol. 1 Brooklyn in celebrating the American release of the Pogues co-founder James Fearnley’s memoir, Here Comes Everybody. He will be there in person to talk about the band, the accordion, UK vs. US and much more.

Christopher Moore in conversation with Euan Morton

Bestselling author Christopher Moore in conversation with audiobook narrator Euan Morton, in honor of Moore’s latest novel The Serpent of Venice. A reception will follow the reading, signing and Q&A.

Amy Rowland and The Transcriptionist

New York Times veteran Amy Rowland presents her debut novel, The Transcriptionist, which follows a woman’s quest to identify a murdered Jane Doe and asks probing questions about journalism and ethics.  


Wednesday, May 14, 7:30 p.m.

Children’s Lit with Jorge Aguirre, Michelle Knudsen, and Aaron Starmer

In honor of Children’s Book Week, join authors Jorge Aguirre (Giants Beware!), Michelle Knudsen (The Dragon of Trelian), and Aaron Starmer (The Riverman) for a panel discussion writing for children, favorite kid lit, fantasy genre and more.

A Very Bookish Storytime

In celebration of Children’s Book Week, join WORD for a very special letter- and-book-themed storytime. They’ll be reading three wonderful books everyone’s sure to love, but especially children ages 3-6.

Open Mic with Len Vlahos and Lori Majewski

Join musician and author Len Vlahos (The Scar Boys), with Lori Majewski (Mad World) as they host WORD’s next Open Mic. Bring some original work to read or a song to sing (3 minutes max). You can sign up in advance by emailing [email protected].

Latin American Noir with McSweeney’s and Fluent City

McSweeney’s Quarterly and Fluent City talk about Latin American crime fiction with editor/translator Jeffrey Gray and translator Anna Kushner. Moderated by Valerie Moundjian, the event is in honor of McSweeney’s new Quarterly, Issue 46, presenting thirteen crime stories from Latin America.

Pitchapalooza with the Book Doctors

Like an American Idol for books, only kinder. Twenty writers will be selected at random to pitch their book. Each writer gets only one minute to pitch their idea. To sign up your pitch, you must purchase The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published by David Henry Sterry and Arrielle Eckstut. Anyone who buys a copy of the book receives a free 20 minute consultation with Sterry and Eckstut, a $100 value. Otherwise, if you’re not interested in pitching but want to check it out, the event is free. Drawing Workshop for Kids with Ben Hatke
Ben Hatke, cartoonist and former circus performer (Zita the Spacegirl) presents a fun and educational workshop for children, full of tips and tricks for drawing. Recommended for kids ages 5 and up, but open to all ages.
