Comedian John Mulaney Coming to NJPAC

Gabrielle Capaldo

On Friday, July 29, two-time Emmy and WGA award-winning comedian, John Mulaney, is performing his 2022 “From Scratch” tour at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

Set to take the Newark stage at 7 p.m., show-goers can purchase tickets here. The event will be a phone-free experience. Guests are encouraged to take in this fresh, new sketch from one of the most beloved comedians in the game.

For those of you who are John Mulaney fans, you understand why “From Scratch” is a suitable title for his 2022 tour. After facing public controversy, rehab and addiction, the stand-up comic needed to start over.

In true Mulaney fashion, he tackled life’s struggle with humorous finesse and has come back better than ever. His new routine is sure to include brutally honest retrospection and classic self-deprecation, the type of humor that has kept his fans coming back for years.

The comedy star began his career in 2008 as an SNL writer, creating iconic characters such as ‘Stefon’ with Bill Hader and appeared as a “Weekend Update” contributor. Mulaney became such a fan favorite that SNL has invited him back to host the show five times— making him a part of SNL’s elite 5-Timers Club.

In 2018, Mulaney received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for his Netflix special, “Kid Gorgeous.” Kid Gorgeous skyrocketed him to stardom, as he took his sketch across the country, selling out Radio City Music Hall and the like.

Netflix and Mulaney’s relationship dates back a decade when he released his 2012 “New In Town” special and later his 2016 special, “The Comeback Kid.” These comedy specials earned him floods of accolades with the AV Club calling The Comeback Kid, “the best hour of his career,” and Ken Tucker from Entertainment Weekly crowning Mulaney as “one of the best stand-up comics alive.”

Mulaney isn’t limited to stand-up comedy, as he’s voice acted in multiple movies such as “Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse” and Netflix’s “Big Mouth.” He also starred in the new reboot of “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” on Disney Plus with Andy Samberg.

His writing career is equally extensive. Mulaney wrote for IFC’s “Documentary Now!” which made a splash with critics calling it a “clever send-up of non-fiction filmmaking.” His Emmy-nominated “John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch” included a musical variety also written by Mulaney himself.

There is no end in sight for Mulaney’s achievements and New Jersey is lucky to have him stopping here on tour. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a curious newcomer, be sure to attend this rare Mulaney appearance and snag yourself an “I Saw Him Right After He Got Outta Rehab” t-shirt.
