This week, Northeast clothing retailer Bob’s Stores made a somber announcement: after failing to secure necessary financing during bankruptcy proceedings, the chain will cease operations permanently. Until July 14, customers can take advantage of deep discounts on the store’s wide range of apparel, including workwear, footwear, team apparel, and family-oriented clothing. Additionally, selected fixtures, furniture, and equipment from the stores will be available for sale.

During this liquidation period, Bob’s Stores will honor gift cards and merchandise credits until the close of business on July 14. It’s important to note that all sales are final, with no returns accepted, although exchanges will be accommodated. The closure affects all 21 remaining Bob’s locations across Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

Founded in 1954 as a surplus outlet in Connecticut, Bob’s Stores grew over the decades to encompass 36 locations across several states. However, the turn of the century brought financial challenges that the company struggled to overcome, leading to multiple bankruptcy filings and changes in ownership.

In a statement, a spokesperson expressed regret over the necessity of liquidating Bob’s Stores. The chain has been a fixture in local communities for nearly 70 years, leaving behind a legacy of customer loyalty and shared memories. The spokesperson extended gratitude to vendors, suppliers, customers, and employees for their steadfast support throughout the years.

Bob’s Stores’ closure comes amid broader difficulties within its parent company, GoDigital Media Group, which also owns Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS). Last month, EMS announced its own store closures and plans to vacate its headquarters in Connecticut, marking a challenging period for the conglomerate.

As Bob’s Stores prepares to lower its shutters for the final time, the Northeast retail landscape bids farewell to a longstanding presence, reflecting the evolving challenges faced by traditional brick-and-mortar retailers in today’s competitive market.
