A wildfire in Rockaway Township, Morris County, New Jersey, led to voluntary evacuations of homes on Friday. The blaze, referred to as the Craigmeur Lookout wildfire, began near Notch Road on Thursday night, spreading quickly. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service responded promptly and urged people to avoid the affected areas.

Local officials reported that 13 structures, including eight homes on Green Pond Lane, were at risk. To assist displaced residents, the township has arranged temporary housing at nearby hotels. Concern is high among local residents as they await further updates.

As of Friday night, the fire had expanded to 140 acres with containment efforts reaching 30 percent. The Fire Service, alongside volunteer firefighters from various parts of New Jersey, deployed ground crews, engines, helicopters, and drones to combat and monitor the fire.

A Red Flag Warning was issued by the National Weather Service due to dry conditions and strong winds, factors that increase the potential for fire spread. Drought conditions have affected much of New Jersey, complicating firefighting efforts. The fire’s cause remains under investigation, with officials set to provide an update on Saturday morning.
