In what shaped up to be a surprising night for many, Donald Trump has won the election for the 47th President of the US. Here in NJ, he was able to massively close the vote gap, while still narrowly losing the state. Nearly 3.8 million registered NJ voters abstained from the election.
In less surprising electoral news, NJ Rep. Andy Kim bested Curtis Bashaw in the state Senate Race. Kim will become the first Asian-American Senator from the state and the first Korean-American Senator in US history. Kim ran on a progressive platform that highlighted popular policy like housing, the economy and abortion rights.
He takes the seat formerly held by Bob Menendez for nearly two decades, who resigned in disgrace after a federal indictment earlier this year.
With the balance of the Senate tipping back toward Republicans, Kim will have his work set out for him at the Capitol. However, NJ voters spoke, and that’s exactly what they chose him to do.
