Plainfield has earned the distinction of being named a Main Street New Jersey community by the state Department of Community Affairs (DCA).
Joining Plainfield in receiving this prestigious designation are Princeton, Millburn, and Haddonfield.
“I am incredibly proud of the work our Special Improvement District (SID) has accomplished to achieve recognition as one of the 2024 Main Street New Jersey Districts,” stated Mayor Adrian Mapp. “This honor reflects the dedication and vision of Executive Director Abel Gomez, local businesses, community members, and partners who are committed to revitalizing Plainfield’s historic downtown. Together, we’re building a vibrant and welcoming space that showcases our city’s rich culture and diversity while driving economic growth and opportunity.”
The Main Street New Jersey designation provides communities with access to technical assistance and specialized training in managing and revitalizing their downtown areas. It also allows them to apply for grants supporting physical improvements, operational needs, and strategic development. The program emphasizes a preservation-based approach to downtown revitalization, focusing on increasing investments, enhancing community identity, supporting local businesses, creating jobs, and preserving historical architecture.
“This achievement marks an important step in our ongoing efforts to breathe new life into Plainfield’s downtown,” added Mario Camino, chair of the Plainfield Special Improvement District.
