A New Jersey woman claims she suffered permanent injuries after hot coffee spilled on her due to Dunkin’ employees allegedly placing the wrong lid on her cup.
Zina Lewis, a resident of East Orange, purchased the coffee on July 15 at a Dunkin’ location on Goffle Road in Hawthorne, according to a personal injury lawsuit filed in state court. The lawsuit alleges that the lid was improperly secured, causing it to come loose when she attempted to drink, resulting in scalding liquid spilling onto her body and limbs.
Lewis asserts that the incident caused “severe and painful injuries” both internally and externally, leaving her unable to resume her normal activities. She reportedly required surgical treatment for the burns and was informed that some injuries may be permanent, the lawsuit states. Additionally, Lewis claims the coffee was excessively hot, exceeding industry standards and making it unsafe for public consumption.
The lawsuit accuses Dunkin’ of negligence and carelessness for serving dangerously hot coffee in a cup with a faulty lid. Lewis is seeking compensation for her medical expenses and has requested a jury trial. The lawsuit, filed on November 15, names Dunkin’ as well as several unidentified employees and corporate entities.
