A man armed with several assault rifles was shot during a confrontation with police Monday at the Mount Allamuchy Boy Scout Reservation in Sussex County, according to authorities.
Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Jonathan McMeen confirmed an ongoing investigation involving the State Police but assured there was no threat to public safety.
Police responded to a call at the 1,000-acre reservation, which includes Camp Somers and Camp Wheeler, and were met with gunfire from the suspect, law enforcement sources reported. An officer returned fire, striking the man.
Aerial images showed a red vehicle at the scene with a rifle mounted on its roof.
NBC New York reported that officers involved in the incident were hospitalized, though details of their injuries were not disclosed. Byram Mayor Alex Rubenstein stated on social media that local officers were part of the response but were not injured.
The reservation, owned by the Patriots’ Path Council, is closed for the winter season. The investigation continues.
