A man who was struck by lightning while golfing at Ballyowen Golf Course last week has died, officials confirmed.
Simon John Mariani, 28, was hit on the 15th hole just before 2 p.m. on July 8 as storms moved over Sussex County. He was airlifted to a hospital after the strike but died Monday, nearly a week later.
Witness Brian Delia, who was golfing about 300 yards away, said his group saw lightning for roughly half an hour before the bolt hit. He said they did not hear any horns warning them to leave until they had already returned to the clubhouse and police were on scene.
Crystal Springs Resort, which operates Ballyowen, said in a statement that staff did sound warning horns and that the storm developed quickly.
Mariani’s wake is scheduled for Thursday, with funeral services to follow Friday.
