McDonald’s might be known for low prices and fast service, but a new economic analysis shows the brand’s footprint in New Jersey reaches far beyond the drive-thru.

According to a study conducted by Oxford Economics, McDonald’s generates more than $1.5 billion in total economic impact across the Garden State.

New Jersey is home to more than 250 McDonald’s restaurants, making it the largest fast-food chain in the state. Each location is locally owned and operated, supported by more than 40 independent owner-operators. The study estimates McDonald’s direct economic contribution in New Jersey exceeds $616 million.

Jobs At Every Level

According to ROI-NJ, Employment plays a major role.

Oxford Economics found that McDonald’s generates around 19,300 jobs across the state. More than 12,500 of those roles are direct positions, including restaurant crew members, managers, and field staff. Another 6,800 jobs are tied to supply-chain operations, consumer spending, and other roles connected to McDonald’s wages.

The vast net of jobs underscores how a single restaurant can influence a broader economy, across multiple industries and careers.

A Significant Source of Tax Revenue

McDonald’s also generates significant tax revenue. The brand produces more than $429 million annually in federal, state, and local taxes, according to the study.

At the local level, the impact is even clearer. In Newark, McDonald’s contributes more than $76 million to local GDP and generates over $13 million in tax revenue. Newark McDonald’s support more than 700 jobs within the city.

Local Ownership and Diversity

Ownership diversity is another major player. Nearly 65 percent of New Jersey McDonald’s owner-operators identify as Asian, Black, Latino, or female. McDonald’s also stands out as an entry-level employer and pathway to ownership. Many began their careers as crew members.

While McDonald’s remains known for Big Macs and McNuggets, the Oxford Economics study shows the chain functions as a powerful economic engine in New Jersey. From job creation and tax revenue to locally owned restaurants, the Golden Arches play a far larger role in the Garden State economy than many of its most passionate customers even realize.
