Travelers aren’t just asking where to go this year. They’re asking what it will cost once they get there.
Airfare remains unpredictable. Restaurant prices are up in most major cities. That leaves one expense that still varies widely: the hotel.
New booking data released by Expedia shows a cluster of U.S. destinations where average nightly hotel rates are hovering under $150 in 2026. The list doesn’t spotlight the usual tourism heavyweights. Instead, it leans toward smaller cities and regional hubs—places that function well as base camps rather than bucket-list checkboxes.
Laughlin, Nevada, sits at the top. It’s close enough to Las Vegas to feel connected, but far enough to avoid Strip pricing. Along the Colorado River, it has long operated as a lower-profile alternative for travelers more interested in desert scenery than casino spectacle.
California appears several times, though not in the way many expect. Bakersfield, Riverside, and San Bernardino—often overlooked in favor of coastal destinations—are drawing attention for affordability and access. Each provides relatively easy reach to national parks, mountain terrain, or Southern California road routes without the nightly rates of Los Angeles or San Diego.

El Paso, Texas, continues to gain ground as a travel stop in its own right. Its location along the Franklin Mountains and its distinct cultural identity give it a presence that feels grounded rather than manufactured. Reno, Nevada, similarly functions as a practical gateway—particularly for those heading toward Lake Tahoe.
Farther east, Oklahoma City and Tulsa have both invested heavily in downtown districts that feel active but not overrun. Huntsville, Alabama, rounds out the group with a growing arts and dining scene layered over its aerospace roots.
San José, California, also appears among Expedia’s affordability picks this year—particularly outside high-demand convention periods.
Expedia’s data reflects average nightly hotel rates, a figure that tends to shape trip decisions more than many travelers admit. When lodging dips below a certain threshold, weekend trips become plausible, and longer stays start to make sense.
Here are the destinations Expedia identified as the most affordable in the U.S. for 2026:
- San Bernardino, California
- El Paso, Texas
- Reno, Nevada
- Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
- San José, California
- Tulsa, Oklahoma
- Laughlin, Nevada
- Bakersfield, California
- Riverside, California
- Huntsville, Alabama
None of these cities market themselves as luxury escapes. That may be the point. In a year where budgets remain top of mind, they’re quietly becoming the places that travelers can actually afford to explore.
