MetLife Stadium Has a New Name. Here’s Why.
If you’ve driven past MetLife Stadium recently and noticed something different, you’re not imagining it. The name changed. But why?
The East Rutherford stadium is temporarily rebranding as New York New Jersey Stadium ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The reason? A strict FIFA policy that applies to every host venue in every World Cup, regardless of country.
Why the Name Had to Change
FIFA’s “clean stadium” policy prohibits corporate-sponsored names and logos at any venue hosting World Cup matches. The rule exists to protect FIFA’s own brand and the exclusive rights of its tournament sponsors.
Any stadium with a corporate name—like MetLife, which is an insurance company—must temporarily adopt a generic geographic name for the duration of the tournament.
Stadiums with non-corporate names get to keep them. For example, Mexico’s Estadio Azteca isn’t named after a company, so its name remains.
What’s Happening at the Stadium
Beyond the name change, MetLife has undergone physical modifications to meet FIFA requirements.
Approximately 1,750 seats have been removed to accommodate the playing field, and the artificial turf has been replaced with natural grass—a requirement for the tournament. Both changes will be reversed after the World Cup concludes.
New York New Jersey Stadium will host eight World Cup matches—including the July 19 final. If you’re planning to commute on match days, here’s what NJ Transit has planned for Penn Station.
Because of overlap, the New York Giants have relocated their summer training camp to the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia.
Once the tournament wraps up, MetLife Stadium gets its name—and its turf—back.
