From Perth Amboy down to Cape May, New Jersey’s 141-mile beach scene is made for all types of fun. Even the kind of fun for dogs, which may surprise you. Dog-friendliness is usually a missing factor from the list of rules for private beaches and public shore points, due to the crowds of people that are already flocking there. However, there are some dog beaches in New Jersey that do welcome furry friends and allow them to enjoy the sand and sun as well.
If you’re looking to change up the daily dog park routine or morning walk route, keep reading for our breakdown of seven dog-friendly beaches that our state has to offer. We’ve even spotlighted each beach’s regulations so your beach day is done right. Make sure to pack the frisbee!
Dog Beaches in New Jersey
1. 8th Avenue Dog Beach: Asbury Park, NJ

Asbury Park’s 8th Avenue Dog Beach is situated among many local dog-friendly establishments so you can fill your day up with activities. Through September 14th, off-the-leash beach time with your dog is allowed between the hours of 6 p.m.and 8:30 a.m. (as long as they’re properly supervised). Additionally, it’s required for your dog to have a town dog license, and handy physical proof of an up-to-date rabies vaccine.
2. Gateway National Recreation Area: Sandy Hook, NJ

Whether your dog is a water or land-lover, Gateway National Recreation Area is a great spot to explore this summer. Dogs are permitted on Gateway’s bayside shores throughout the year on a leash, specifically Plum Island and Horseshoe Cove. They’re also allowed to traverse some of the trails, but must remain leashed for this as well.
3. Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area: Manasquan, NJ

Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area in Manasquan is a hidden gem among dog beaches in New Jersey. This scenic place is situated near the Manasquan inlet, and dogs are permitted on the eastern (front) section of the cove. This spot also offers a hydrating station for your dog along with an area to rinse them off after your day. Similar to Gateway National Recreation Area’s rules, dogs must be leashed at all times.
4. Island Beach State Park: Berkeley Township, NJ

With almost 10 miles of beach and nature to explore, the Island Beach State Park area is a great site for your next shore outing with your dog. Leashed dogs are permitted in the summer season on the non-swimming beaches and on the trails. However, this does exclude the Spizzle Creek Bird Blind Trail. It’s recommended to check your dog for ticks after your visit, as Island Beach State Park does tend to be buggy some days.
5. Longport Dog Beach: Egg Harbor Township, NJ

Longport Dog Beach is an off-leash, bayside beach where dogs are welcomed all summer. Because this beach tends to get crowded and has limited parking, it’s suggested to arrive on the earlier side. Being that it’s a bayside beach, the water is much calmer for swimming and water activities. It’s also important to know that there aren’t any locations on the beach to dispose of your trash, so plan to handle this after you’ve left the site.
6. Beach Haven Doggy Bay: Beach Haven, NJ

For Long Beach Island beachgoers, Beach Haven Doggy Bay is the only beach on the Island that is dog-friendly year-round. Dogs must be on a leash (that is no greater than 6 feet in length) or under control at all times in order to enjoy swimming in the bay and hanging out on the sand.
7. Wildwood Dog Park and Beach: Wildwood, NJ

The Wildwood Dog Park and Beach separates itself from other dog beaches in New Jersey not only because it’s one of the largest in the world, but also due to the 30 foot-tall fire hydrant that affirms your pooch is welcome. In addition to the beach area (where dogs must be on a leash), dogs can roam free within the enclosed park area year-round. The beach area is open from dawn to dusk, while the park stays open all day.
