There’s no bigger bummer than looking forward to a good smoke all day, only to find your marijuana’s gone stale, tasteless, or – even worse – moldy. You probably don’t want to shell out for an expensive storage solution, but let’s be real. Marijuana is expensive. It’s a waste of money to let it go to waste because of poor storage. To help you get the best of your weed, here are some easy, cost-effective guidelines to follow for long term marijuana storage.
Invest in a UV-Proof Glass Stash Containers
If you’re only storing a small amount of marijuana, consider buying a special stash box. They’re discreet and do a great job of hiding the smell, if you’re hiding your stash from roommates or anyone else. They offer protection to keep your bud fresh long-term, and even encourage the curing process to continue, so your quality gets even better over time.
Wooden Stash Boxes
A wood stash box is a convenient, and often stylish, way to store your weed. Many of them come with compartments for your other gear, so it’s easy to keep it all in one place without just throwing it all in a Ziploc baggie. If you go this route, avoid cedar – it changes the taste of your marijuana. Instead, go for stash boxes made specifically for marijuana. They’ll generally be made out of woods like bamboo, acacia, teak, mahogany, walnut, or cherry. Your bud will stay fresh and the flavor won’t be affected.
Glass Mason Jars, Stored Carefully
Keeping your marijuana in a cool, dark place is a time-tested storage method. Buy a mason jar big enough for your stash (quart-size is usually good), and make sure the screw-top lid is always on tight. But don’t keep it on a shelf out in the open. Marijuana likes darkness, which a transparent jar won’t offer. Keep the jar in a cupboard or other cool, dark place – preferably someplace humid, between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re feeling fancy (or just particularly protective of your weed), consider adding a humidity pack. You can stick these in your jar and they’ll help maintain optimal humidity levels. Marijuana likes its air humid.
Stick It In The Freezer
Scientists have found that marijuana stored in the freezer retains its THC and freshness over time the best. So if you’re serious about potency and maintaining freshness over a really long period of time, go this route. You can prepare your stash by putting it in several zip-top freezer bags (make sure to squeeze out all the air before sealing) and wrapping it all in aluminum foil. If you’ve been using the mason jar method, you can just pop that in the freezer as well.
After you take them out for use, try not to touch the flower until it’s fully thawed; the trichomes can easily break off when they’re still frozen. Let your marijuana come to room temperature before handling it.
Stale, mildewy bud is a bummer. Luckily, it’s easy to prevent that with a few cost-effective, long-term storage options.
