Peruvian Gastronomy Overview

Peruvian cuisine has all the traditional dishes that give an unforgettable experience. Typically, Peruvian meals are spicy and well-seasoned for rich flavors. The main ingredients used for seasoning bring so much aroma and flavor to them. For example, garlic, yellow chili, and herbs like oregano make a meal delectable. 

In Peru, all the main dishes are either served with rice or potatoes to balance the taste. Today, Peruvian cuisine preserves much of its legacy, even with new ingredients and styles. The food is not only visually appealing, but the flavors make you wonder when is the best time to visit Peru to get the most of the seasonal food and breathtaking views.

Coastal Food

The coastal food in Peru is divided into marine and creole food. The best meal you can have there is based on shellfish or fish. If you want to have Instagram-perfect meal, you need to order shrimp chupe, ceviche, choritos a la chalaca, stretcher etc. 

Ceviche is one of the most famous dishes in Peru. It is basically a combination of fresh fish and seafood and marinated in lemon juice. For typical dishes of the coast’s Creole food, there is a chicken pickle, rice with duck, and cau cau.

 

Andean Food

The food of the Sierra is simple, with three main ingredients: corn, potatoes, and other tubers. There are other representative and highly flavorful meals in  Andean cuisine known as pachamanca, huatia, huancaina potato, and others. 

What’s simpler yet flavorful about Peruvian meals is that they always have potatoes in them. The locals love to have boiled potatoes covered with cream cheese, oil, salt, and yellow pepper and paired with any side dish of meat, chicken, or pork.

 

Jungle Food 

The cuisine of the jungle is all categorized on the basis of the traditional consumption of meats such as suri, tapir, armadillo, turtles, and wooly monkeys. There are many other popular Peruvian jungle cuisine dishes, such as Juanes, tacacho con Cecina, and more. 

The Juane is one of the most appreciated dishes as it is made from rice, chicken meat, olives, boiled eggs, and other spices. The mixture is wrapped in a bijao leaf for cooking for an hour.

 

Chicha Morada 

 scrumptious meals that represent tradition and culture, Chicha Morada is a traditional Peruvian soft drink that is a must-have when visiting Peru. The drink is made with purple corn, pineapple, apples, lemon, and others. 

You can find this drink in any restaurant you visit. It is mainly served with the Peruvian meal to elevate the flavors.

 

Picarones 

Picarones are the traditional sweets in Peruvian cuisine. The representation of this dish is in the form of rings made of wheat flour dough, pumpkin, and sweet potato. 

It is bathed with sugar cane called chancaca. These are offered in the country’s religious processions.
