Eye defects and their corrections

Poor lifestyle and eating habits can negatively affect our eyes. In this modern era of technology, everything is available on our smart devices. This has increased our screen timing and these devices cause defects to our eyes.

Various defects that can be happened to our eyes are:

Nearsightedness or Myopia

Myopia often called nearsightedness is an eye defect in which the patient can only focus on nearby objects. This disease is caused when there is a lot of curvature in the cornea.

In this defect, the light rays are focused in front of the retina.

This defect can be corrected using a concave lens. The laser corrections can reduce the curvature and provide clear vision. What do concave lenses do? Concave lenses bend light in such a manner that it diverges from the focal point of lenses. Due to the cornea getting stretched out, the light rays focus on a point before the retina. This is what happens in myopia. But when you use concave lenses, the light diverges a bit so that the focal point extends a bit and the retina gets a clearer image.

Farsightedness or Hyperopia

Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is another defect that is caused to the eye. In this defect, the patient can not see the nearby objects however, can properly see the far objects. This defect can be corrected with a convex lens. This defect occurs when insufficient curvature occurs in the cornea.

How is hypermetropia caused? In hypermetropia, the cornea is shrunk in a manner that the focal point of the eye is extended behind the retina. It can be dealt with by using convex lenses. Convex lenses converge the light rays that pass through them, they bend light in such a way. So, when you use such a lens, the focal point of the eye shifts on to the retina. This defect can also be solved with laser technology.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is an ailment that is caused by having an irregular shape of the cornea. With this disease, there is an irregular curve in the eye. Due to this, the focal point of the eye changes irregularly and causes distorted and blurry vision. While all other diseases can be attributed to poor eye-care astigmatism is mainly caused by genetics. The main symptoms of astigmatism are the same as other eye ailments, like headaches, squinting, and eye irritation.

This can be cured by eyeglasses, contact lenses, and LASIK. There are certain glasses like oval glasses with power that look trendy and also help curb the ailment. Like two birds with one stone.

When it comes to glasses for astigmatism, someone may have questions about how astigmatism affect glasses lens thickness. But for sure, don’t forget to ask your doctor about your glasses prescription.

Presbyopia

This problem is related to age, which means that around the age of 45-60 years, your eyesight starts to decline. The patient is unable to see nearby objects. The symptoms often include the patient trying to read small letters from far away. Your vision will start to blur for nearby objects and eye strain and headaches whenever you focus on something near you.

In the case of presbyopia, you should go visit a doctor as soon as possible. Symptoms can often increase to getting a hazy vision, sudden loss of sight in one eye (which can be scary, but it can be rectified, don’t worry). You can also get blurry vision or see halos or spots in your vision. It is a very troublesome disease to handle, considering it occurs to people of an older age.

While the symptoms sound like myopia, presbyopia can be corrected by using bi-focal lenses. They contain a convex lens to solve hypermetropia and a concave lens to solve the myopic ailment.
