“Yoga Now” at Jersey City’s Jivamukti Yoga Center

by Lauren Scrudato

I’ve always been hesitant to try out a yoga class because I don’t want to be that girl who sits anxiously in the back of the room looking around at everyone else who can lift their leg behind their head with ease. But after spending some time at Jivamukti Yoga in Jersey City, I felt much more intrigued and at ease.

When I asked co-owner Austin Sanderson what a rookie like myself could expect when they first walk in to Jivamukti for a class, he responded simply, “compassion.”

Austin and fellow owner Bobby Hranichny do not think of their center as simply a place for area residents to come and partake in a yoga class or two. And Jivamukti instructors do not regard you as just

another blank face in their class. They will give you extra attention and aid to help you progress. Austin and Bobby pride themselves on making the center a welcoming environment that brings people together and keeps them coming back each day, at anytime.

The motto of Jivamukti Yoga is “Yoga Now”, meaning the center, equipped with two studios, is open whenever you have the urge to relieve the stresses of everyday life. Jivamukti offers over 70 classes and events per week, along with monthly workshops, and a class is available every hour on the hour from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. The six types of classes offered are Open class, Spiritual Warrior, Beginner Basics, Beginner Vinyasa, In-class Privates and Jivamukti Meditation. Aerial Yoga is also a fun recent addition to the studio.

Jivamukti Yoga is much more than just a workout. It is a daily practice that benefits your physical body and relaxes the mind. As long as you enter the studio with an open mind and absorb the philosophy of Jivamukti Yoga you will notice a calmer sense of self, allowing you to block out the noise and stress you endure everyday. The best part is that anyone is capable of practicing Jivamukti, regardless of your health, age, religion, or financial situation.

Austin and Bobby strive to accommodate as many people of varying backgrounds and interests as they can, and they feel the best way to draw in new students is through music. They currently have classes that play gospel music on Sundays, house music on Fridays, and live music on Wednesdays, with more genres in the works.

If you start by doing the basic program and end up falling in love with Jivamukti, you can take your practice a step further. The center in Jersey City has information on a 300-hour teacher training program where you can transform yourself and learn from the founders of the Jivamukti method in the beautiful landscape of Costa Rica for a month in June.

Whether you just want to see what Jivamukti is all about or you’re a dedicated student looking for a new environment to practice in, the owners and instructors in Jersey City will share their passion with you.
