Yelp just released its first-ever Top 100 Sandwich Shops list, featuring popular spots from across the country according to Yelp reviewers. The list includes everything from classic cheesesteaks and Italian heroes to spicy po-boys and fried chicken subs. Two New Jersey spots earned national recognition, and both are located in North Jersey. Despite how valid Yelp lists may be, we took a closer look at these two local favorites.

Second Street Bakery — Jersey City

Second Street Bakery is a small, no-frills, family-owned spot in Jersey City where you order at the counter and take your food to go. There is no seating, but the fresh Italian sandwiches, stuffed breads, and baked goods have kept customers coming back since 1929. This cash-only, old-school bakery is known for generous portions, fresh ingredients, and prices that will not shock your wallet. The fresh bread plays a starring role in every sandwich, giving it a perfect crust and soft inside that keeps people hooked. Over the decades, this local spot has earned its reputation as one of Jersey City’s go to spots for classic, hearty sandwiches. The stuffed breads come packed full and sell out fast, so getting there early is a smart move.

Saigon Subs and Café — Morristown

Saigon Subs and Café has been around for more than 30 years, specializing in banh mi sandwiches in Morristown. This family-run spot brings fresh ingredients and bold flavors together with every order. They toast the bread just right, pack the sandwich with tender, flavorful meats, and pile on veggies that add a satisfying crunch. Every bite has that outstanding balance of flavors and textures. The prices are solid, and while the service moves fast, the sandwiches can take a bit to come out. Ordering ahead is a smart move. Locals know this place as a go-to for something tasty and satisfying. They also have traditional Vietnamese drinks and desserts to round out the meal.

If you’re anywhere near Jersey City or Morristown, consider grabbing a sandwich from one of these spots—or both, since they’re only 30 minutes apart. Give them a try and see what you think.
