Nestled in the heart of Long Branch, New Jersey, Avenue Restaurant is a hidden gem that promises an extraordinary dining experience. From the moment you step foot inside, the warm ambiance, breathtaking views, and welcoming staff set the stage for a memorable evening. Recently, I had the pleasure of dining at Avenue, and it was a gastronomic adventure like few others.
Executive Chef Eric Guerin has been cooking beside his Mother and Grandmother since he was a kid. At 19, he began his professional career, which has seen stints at famous eateries such as Manhattan’s Gramercy Tavern and San Francisco’s Veneros and Trios Bakery. Pieces of his career shine through in Avenue’s menu where guests can expect to find French classics complemented by contemporary flair.
Avenue – The Restaurant
To start off the evening, we decided to indulge in their famous seafood tower. The tower was a breathtaking masterpiece—adorned with an impressive selection of fresh oysters, succulent shrimp, sweet lobster tails, and delicate clams. Served alongside zesty cocktail sauce and mignonette, each bite was a celebration of the ocean’s bounty. The platter showcased the restaurant’s commitment to sourcing the finest seafood, and it truly set the tone for the rest of the meal.
As a lover of refreshing and light appetizers, the salmon ceviche and tuna crudo were the perfect choices. The Salmon Ceviche sported a burst of citrus flavor, featuring fresh salmon marinated in a zingy mixture of lime, cilantro, and red onion. The Tuna Crudo, on the other hand, was a delicate dance of flavors, with thinly sliced tuna accompanied by avocado and a drizzle of sweet and tangy ponzu sauce.
Next up was the steak tartare, a dish that showcased the chef’s artistry in blending flavors and textures. The finely diced beef was flavored with traditional condiments, including capers, shallots and dijon mustard. The tartare was adorned with a raw quail egg yolk, which added luxuriousness that bound the elements together harmoniously.
Moving on to the main course, we reveled in the seared salmon and Maine lobster. The salmon was a true culinary masterpiece, boasting crispy skin that encapsulated a tender and flaky flesh. The dish was accompanied by a medley of seasonal vegetables and a delectable lemon dill sauce that only worked to enhance the natural flavors of the fish.
The Maine lobster was a show-stopper. The lobster tail was perfectly cooked to retain its succulence, while the drawn butter on the side added a decadent touch. It was a dish that celebrated simplicity and allowed the quality of the lobster to shine through.
For those seeking a taste of Italy, the bucatini was an absolute delight. The tubular spaghetti was bathed in a rich tomato sauce, infused with garlic, basil, and a hint of red pepper flakes for a subtle kick. The dish was crowned with a generous shaving of aged Parmigiano Reggiano, making it an exquisite comfort food with a touch of elegance.
To end the remarkable culinary journey on a sweet note, we indulged in the crème brûlée. With a perfectly caramelized sugar crust, the custard beneath was velvety and smooth, delivering a symphony of flavors that left us wanting more.
