A small pizzeria in Newton has captured national attention as Food Network named it New Jersey’s best slice of pizza. The recognition shines a spotlight on Sussex County, though fans across the state are likely to have their own favorites.
The honor went to Dominick’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria, the oldest pizzeria in Newton. Brothers Peter and Sal Lombardo, who trained in Brooklyn’s Carroll Gardens, widely considered one of the country’s pizza capitals, have run the family business since taking over in the 1970s. They brought their recipes, techniques and passion for dough to New Jersey, building a loyal following over decades.
Dominick’s menu goes beyond pizza. Diners can choose from pasta, seafood, chicken, veal and sandwiches, with daily lunch and dinner specials. Its pizza offerings include thin Brooklyn-style pies with a spicy edge and Palermo square slices layered with marinara, onions, herbs and seasonings. The restaurant also provides delivery, catering for parties up to 80 people, and a gluten-free menu. Customers can bring their own wine or beer.
Food Network highlighted New Jersey pizzaiolos as worthy competitors to New York’s best, noting that standing out in the state comes down to knowing dough. Dominick’s, the network said, delivers pies that rival the finest in the Big Apple.
The pizzeria opens seven days a week, closing at 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and at 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
