The Stork Club Returns to NJ at The Albion Hotel Alongside Luxury and Vintage Digs

Last week, I stepped through the doors of The Albion Hotel and was transported back in time. Not to some vague, undefined “olden days,” but to a specific era of glamour, sophistication, and just a hint of naughtiness. The Stork Club, a legendary New York City institution that once played host to the likes of Sinatra, Monroe, and Kelly, has been reborn in the heart of downtown Summit, and if last night’s grand opening is any indication, it’s poised to become a destination for those seeking a taste of classic elegance with a modern twist.

For those unfamiliar with the original, the Stork Club was the place to be in Manhattan from the 1930s to the 1960s. It was where Hollywood stars rubbed shoulders with socialites, politicians, and even gangsters. Its founder, Sherman Billingsley, cultivated an air of exclusivity, and the club’s iconic Stork logo became a symbol of the good life. Now, The Albion Hotel, a boutique hotel that itself exudes a sense of timeless sophistication, has brought the Stork Club back to life, and it’s done so with remarkable attention to detail.

Walking into the Stork Club is like stepping onto a movie set. The décor is a masterful blend of Art Deco and mid-century modern, with plush velvet seating, gleaming brass accents, and a palette of rich jewel tones. A grand piano sits in the corner, ready to provide the soundtrack to an evening of cocktails and conversation. But it’s the subtle touches that truly capture the spirit of the original: the vintage menus, the black-and-white photographs adorning the walls, and the staff impeccably dressed in crisp white jackets. Even the air seems to crackle with a sense of anticipation, as if some legendary figure might walk through the door at any moment.

I attended their grand opening as it was a celebration of this bygone era, with guests dressed to the nines, sipping champagne and enjoying an array of passed hors d’oeuvres. The highlight for many, myself included, was the outdoor cigar lounge. Set on a beautifully landscaped patio, the lounge offered a selection of premium cigars, expertly paired with cognac and whiskey. It was a scene straight out of “Mad Men,” with the aroma of fine tobacco mingling with the sounds of laughter and clinking glasses.

But the Stork Club is more than just a nostalgic recreation. While it pays homage to the past, it also embraces the present. The cocktail menu, for instance, features both classic concoctions and modern creations, all expertly crafted by skilled mixologists. I sampled the “Stork Club Martini,” a perfectly balanced blend of gin, vermouth, and orange bitters, and the “Summit Sour,” a refreshing twist on a classic with local honey and apple cider. Both were superb, and the presentation was impeccable, with each drink served in elegant glassware.

The food menu is equally impressive. The emphasis is on small plates and shareable bites, perfect for grazing while enjoying the ambiance. The charcuterie board, with its selection of artisanal cheeses and cured meats, was a standout, as were the mini lobster rolls and the truffle fries. It’s clear that the culinary team has put a great deal of thought into creating a menu that complements the overall experience.

What truly sets the Stork Club apart, however, is its commitment to service. From the moment I arrived, I was treated like a VIP. The staff was attentive without being intrusive, knowledgeable about the menu and the history of the club, and genuinely eager to ensure that every guest had a memorable experience. This level of personalized service is rare these days, and it’s a testament to the dedication of The Albion Hotel team.

As the night drew to a close and I stepped back out onto the streets of Summit, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement for what the Stork Club’s arrival means for Summit Township and the neighboring community. We have no shortage of excellent restaurants and bars, but few offer this level of sophistication and old-world charm. The Stork Club is more than just a place to grab a drink or a bite to eat; it’s an experience, a journey back in time to an era when elegance and glamour reigned supreme. Whether you’re a seasoned cocktail connoisseur, a history buff, or simply looking for a unique night out, the Stork Club at The Albion Hotel is well worth a visit. Just be prepared to be transported.
