A Glorious Holiday Spectacle at Paper Mill Playhouse: White Christmas Review

The Paper Mill Playhouse’s 2024 production of White Christmas is a dazzling holiday experience that’s bound to put you in the spirit of the season. From the moment the curtain rises, the audience is transported to a world of nostalgia, romance, and unforgettable music. The December 1 8 p.m. performance was a stunning display of talent, energy, and holiday magic, and it exceeded every expectation.

The show’s storytelling, based on the beloved 1954 film, has been beautifully reimagined for the stage, maintaining the warmth and charm of the original while adding a fresh vibrancy. Directed with precision and love for the holiday spirit, White Christmas is a show that embraces tradition while still feeling modern and exciting.

One of the standout performances of the evening came from Savannah Austin, who played Susan Waverly with both grace and heart. Austin’s portrayal of this young, hopeful character was nothing short of enchanting. She brought a perfect blend of innocence, determination, and undeniable charm to the stage.

Equally impressive was the incredible dancing and singing that defined the show. The choreography, particularly in Act Two, Scene One, during the showstopper “I Love a Piano,” was breathtaking. The tap-dancing number was, without a doubt, the best I have ever seen. The performers moved with such synchronization, precision, and joy that it felt like the entire theater was buzzing with energy. The rhythm of their taps resonated through the room, and the audience responded with an enthusiastic roar of applause. This number alone is worth the price of admission, showcasing the true brilliance of the entire cast and creative team.

But the spectacular dancing didn’t end there. Throughout the entire production, the ensemble showcased stunning choreography in nearly every scene. The tap numbers, the ballroom dances, and the spirited chorus numbers all helped to elevate the production to a level of excellence that was infectious. The choreography, featuring original Broadway choreography Randy Skinner reproduced by Kristyn Pope, was a highlight of the evening, with each number delivering perfect timing, flair, and heart.

The music, of course, is at the heart of White Christmas, and the show does not disappoint. Every beloved Irving Berlin tune—from “Blue Skies” to the iconic title song—was performed with energy and emotion. The singing throughout the show was spectacular, with each number ringing out crystal clear and filled with joy. The voices of the cast blended beautifully, and the harmonies were impeccable. The large ensemble numbers like “Snow” and “Happy Holidays” were particularly mesmerizing, filling the theater with the sound of the holidays.

What truly makes this production stand out is how it encapsulates the essence of the season: joy, hope, and the warmth of togetherness. From the dazzling set design to the unforgettable performances, White Christmas at Paper Mill Playhouse is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season.

Overall, this production of White Christmas, running until December 29, was a wonderful take on the classic story, brimming with heart, humor, and festive cheer. The entire cast delivered a memorable, show-stopping performance, with Savannah Austin’s portrayal of Susan Waverly being a true highlight. This is the perfect holiday show for anyone looking to embrace the holiday spirit—an absolute must-see!
