Celebrate Pride Online with a Virtual Children’s Book Reading

by Abby Montanez

In the midst of cancelling and/or postponing large in-person gatherings around the globe, Pride Month celebrations are among the many events that will look and feel a bit different this year. Organizations are taking their platforms and programs online for 2020 by offering virtual and socially-distant resources to LGBTQ+ communities. Think Zoom dance battles, drag makeup tutorials and even a #CantCancelPride benefit concert streaming on iHeartRadio. In order to celebrate Pride online locally, one event we’re super excited about is a virtual children’s book reading this Thursday, June 25, featuring author Nadine Haruni.

Jersey City Free Public Library, Hudson Pride Center and Word Bookstore present Freeda The Frog and the Two Mommas Next Door Virtual Book Reading, featuring author Nadine Haruni! Freeda the Frog and the Two Mommas Next Door is a recent winner of the Gold Mom's Choice Award. When Freeda's tadpoles meet a tadpole with two frog moms for parents, Freeda teachers her kids the importance of recognizing that not all families are or have to be built the same: what matters is the love inside it. After an introduction, the virtual book reading will take kids on a trip through Freeda's wonderful and colorful world (with Nadine as their guide!). At the end of the reading, a thoughtful Q&A with Nadine and the HPC and JCFPL hosts will follow. To pre-order the book, please visit amzn.to/freedathefrog or bit.ly/freedathebook To learn more about and read other books in the Freeda the Frog series follow @freedathefrog on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. #lgbt #lgbtq🌈 #pride🌈 #pridemonth #freedathefrog #nadineharuni

The event is on behalf of the Jersey City Free Public Library, in collaboration with Hudson Pride Center and Word Bookstore. Kids and parents will be able to tune in at 11 a.m. via the library’s Facebook page. Haruni will be reading from “Freeda the Frog and the Two Mommas Next Door,” which teaches children the important lesson that not all families are built the same. The book is currently available for pre-order, out on August 4, and is the winner of the Gold Mom’s Choice Award.

After a brief introduction, Haruni will take kids through a reading where they’ll get to explore the colorful world that the author dreamt up. “Freeda the Frog and the Two Mommas Next Door” is the fifth book in a Freeda the Frog series and past topics have included helping children to navigate loss, divorce and moving away from home.

Following the reading, Haruni will be taking part in a Q&A and hosts from the Hudson Pride Center and Jersey City Free Public Library will be answering questions as well. To learn more about the author and to read the other aforementioned books in the series, you can follow @freedathefrog on all social media platforms.
