Using celebrities to sell things is as old as the concept of celebrity itself, but recently, things have changed. Modern celebrities from George Clooney (Casamigos Tequila), Dwayne Johnson (Teremana Tequila), Cameron Diaz (Aveline Organic Wines) and more are no longer repping these brands, but owning them. And as owners, they’re making sure their products are the best quality. And it looks like the next generation is getting in on it, too. Here are two new celebrity spirits you should know.
Selvarey
Selvarey is a line of high-quality rums co-owned by none other than superstar Bruno Mars. The “King of the Jungle” is made in Panama and comes in a few styles. The white ($29.99 on sale) is aged for three to five years in oak barrels, which gives it incredible smoothness and a hint of vanilla tinged sweetness. The line also includes two flavored rums, cacao ($32.99 on sale) and coconut ($29.99 on sale).
818 Tequila
818 Tequila is a new brand of small-batch tequila owned by Kendall Jenner. The fashion model and reality TV star’s brand is named after the U.S. area code she grew up in. The tequila, however, is made in Jalisco, Mexico. Contracted from family-owned blue agave farmers who use sustainable farming techniques, the tequila is made in a Blanco, Reposado and Anejo styles.
The Blanco ($41.99 on sale) has lovely aromas of lemongrass and floral elements with a light minerality. On the palate it is sweet agave and vanilla from the oak barrels, and it is very smooth and bright on the finish. The Reposado ($54.99 on sale) is a complex mix of vanilla, honey and meringue on the nose that carry through to the palate where roast agave, caramel, and toasted pecans come out on the finish. Both are easy drinking tequilas.
