World Cup 2026: Preparation for Soccer’s Biggest Stage

by Mike Ham

Today, I’m thrilled to share an exciting episode recorded live from MetLife Stadium in Rutherford, New Jersey. Joining me were Lauren LaRusso and Bruce Revman, city managers and co-hosts, along with Steve Sansonese, VP of Operations and Events at MetLife Stadium, and Jim Kirkos, CEO and President of the Meadowlands Chamber of Commerce. We dove deep into the preparations for the 2026 World Cup and the incredible impact it will have on our community.

Lauren LaRusso kicked off our discussion by highlighting the New Jersey Youth Soccer Camp happening right on the field. With around 700 kids participating, this initiative by the New York/New Jersey 2026 World Cup Host Committee aims to give back to the community. Partnering with the US Soccer Foundation, New Jersey Youth Soccer, and local YMCAs, the camp offers young athletes a unique experience, playing on the same field where legends like Messi have played.

Bruce Revman elaborated on the host committee’s responsibilities, which include everything from transportation and security to marketing and community events. Formed officially in April 2023, the committee has been working tirelessly to ensure that the region is well-prepared for the World Cup. Bruce emphasized the strong working relationship between New York and New Jersey, which was crucial in securing the finals. Lauren and Bruce both spoke about the unity between New York and New Jersey, which has been instrumental in their success. The World Cup has brought together city governments, community leaders, and business leaders in a way that transcends everyday collaboration. This unified effort has set a high bar for how to work together across the river, showcasing the best minds in marketing, media, tourism, business, and security.

Lauren shared some staggering statistics: the 2026 World Cup will feature 48 qualifying countries, 104 matches, and 8 games played at MetLife Stadium, including the final. On July 19, 2026, an estimated 3 billion people will be watching. The scale of this event is mind-boggling, and the preparations reflect that. Steve Sansonese provided insights into the extensive preparations at MetLife Stadium. From expanding the pitch to meet FIFA’s requirements to enhancing the stadium’s infrastructure, the team is working diligently to ensure everything is perfect. Steve also mentioned the unique challenges of hosting such a large-scale event, comparing it to the Super Bowl but on an even grander scale.

Jim Kirkos discussed the broader impact on the community and local businesses. The Meadowlands Chamber of Commerce is actively working to ensure that local businesses are prepared for the influx of visitors. From marketing and branding to educational seminars, the chamber is doing everything possible to help local businesses capitalize on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As we look forward to the 2026 World Cup, it’s clear that the event will be a monumental occasion for New Jersey and New York. The preparations are extensive, the community is engaged, and the excitement is palpable. We can’t wait to see how this incredible event unfolds and the lasting impact it will have on our region.
