The Benzel-Busch Laureus Football Initiative Uses Sport To Change Lives Of Local Youth

by Lauren Scrudato

Benzel Busch is not just known for its high standard of automotive excellence. The motor car company recently hosted a special event at bergenPAC as a celebration to kick-off the Benzel-Busch Laureus Football Initiative benefiting Englewood’s youth.
The event included a street fair and concert by the internationally known band Vintage Trouble, who has toured with The Who, Lenny Kravitz and Bon Jovi. In addition to taking photos with the band, students and coaches from Englewood’s undefeated Champions of the Junior League and students from Dwight Morrow’s football team had meet and greets with Englewood Mayor Frank Huttle and Superintendent of Schools, Donald Carlisle.

The two-year long partnership of Benzel-Busch and Laureus Sport For Good Foundation USA will promote social change and help make a difference in the lives of youth through football. In the last three years, the work of Laureus USA and similar initiatives has changed the lives of nearly 90,000 kids.

The Benzel-Busch Laureus Football Initiative will provide support to about 200 3rd to 12th grade Englewood students per year who want to play football but may not have the resources to take part in the popular sport through an after school program that will extend into the summer months. The goal of the program is to use athletics as a motivation to succeed in all aspects of life by physically preparing the participants for high school football while teaching lessons about discipline, self-esteem and cooperation.
