Yes, Homemade Cereal is a Thing

by Abby Montanez

It finally happened. Cereal has gone gourmet! While we were all distracted by Instagram feeds filled with focaccia gardens and sourdough snapshots, something amazing happened. Homemade cereal creations started popping up everywhere. First, mini pancakes made their TikTok debut. Then, the Internet ran wild with Half Baked Harvest’s version of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. So yes, homemade cereal is officially a thing.

I’m sure most people, like myself, never even considered making cereal from scratch. How would one even start? I’ve come to find in my research that it’s actually not that complicated. It’s really just time-consuming, over anything else. However, I can only imagine that the final product is more rewarding and tasty than you could’ve possibly imagined. (And it goes without saying that homemade cereal is head and shoulders above the store bought stuff.)

Here are six homemade cereal recipes to get you started.

Pop-Tarts

“Pop-Tarts cereal is the new pancake cereal! To make it, simply cut out a million gillion tiny squares of pie dough, brush them with egg wash, top with a dot of jam, seal with another tiny square, bake, cool and top with glaze and sprinkles. It’s definitely a big project, but it’s a great way to get kids involved in the kitchen. They’ll love making them as much as eating them!”

Chocolate Chip Cookie

“Is cookie cereal the next trend!? Would you try it!?? Next time I’m going to try with ice cream instead of milk.” – Recipe by @dcfoodporn

Cinnamon Toast Crunch

“Better than store-bought Homemade Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Yes, you can make cinnamon toast crunch at home. It’s way easier than you think, and yes, it will be better than the boxed stuff, so much better. This cereal is extra crunchy, has a touch of butter, is flaky, perfectly sweet, and heavy on the cinnamon. Every bite is roll your eyes back good. It’s best enjoyed any time of day…with milk, as an ice cream topping, or simply by the handfuls.” – Recipe by Half Baked Harvest

🍩MINI DONUTS OR FRENCH TOAST BALL CEREAL 🥣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ This is probably our last “cereal” post for a while because it’s getting old fast 😂 buuuuuut how could we resist these cute donuts? They’re made from TWO ingredients. TWO!!! We even did the milk thing for those 🍼. The French toast were delicious too but definitely couldn’t add milk 😂⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🍩DONUT CEREAL:⁣⁣ 3 cups self rising flour⁣⁣ 1 1/2 cups yogurt⁣⁣ GLAZE: ⁣⁣ Powdered sugar ⁣⁣ Milk⁣⁣ Vanilla extract ⁣ Cocoa powder (if making chocolate)⁣ Toppings of choice⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Mix the flour and yogurt together to form a dough. Knead it on a floured surface and roll it out to 1 inch thick. Use a round cutter or whatever you can find to form small rounds in the dough. Use a smaller cutter to make the smaller hole in the center. Fry them on each side until golden (no more than a couple minutes)⁣. Decorate as desired- we used vanilla and chocolate glaze….add to a bowl with milk and enjoy! 😍⁣ ⁣ 🍞FRENCH TOAST BALL “cereal”⁣⁣ Sliced bread without crusts (about 6)⁣⁣ 2 eggs⁣⁣ Tablespoon milk Cinnamon (amount optional)⁣⁣ Sugar (amount optional) ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Cut each slice of bread into 4 squares and roll up each square into a ball. In a small bowl, mix together eggs, milk, sugar, and cinnamon. Put the balls into the egg mixture and coat evenly. Fry in a pan or griddle until golden all around. Toss the balls into a cinnamon sugar mixture and coat evenly.
