Livability recently released its Top 25 Best Places to Live in the Northeast and four New Jersey cities made the list. The Northeast is huge, with everything from waterfront towns to major metro centers, so New Jersey appearing four times shows how varied life can be here.
Each city below brings something different to the table. One leans suburban and family-focused. One feels historic and rich in culture. One offers New York access along the waterfront while still holding its own identity. And one stays affordable with history still visible in the city itself.
These are the four New Jersey cities recognized as top places to live in the Northeast. Although there are many great places to live in New Jersey, we’re assuming Livability’s metrics must have only considered larger cities. What do you think, did they get it right?
Clifton

Clifton ranked highest among New Jersey cities and feels like a place built for everyday life. The commute into New York is realistic, but you do not need the city to stay busy. There are parks everywhere, youth sports are a big part of the community, and families often settle here long term. Proximity to major highways and schools are a major draw, and there’s enough space and greenery to break from the noise without feeling disconnected.
Why people choose Clifton
• Suburban atmosphere with manageable NYC access
• Lots of parks, recreation and youth activities
• Well regarded schools
• A community that feels long term and rooted
Newark

Newark is one of the oldest cities in the country, but Livability highlighted something more current: the blend of culture, food and affordability that keeps the city evolving. The Ironbound brings international dining at a level most suburbs cannot match. Museums, theaters and festivals fill weekends, and the Prudential Center adds concerts, Devils hockey and major events that draw people into downtown.
Why people choose Newark
• More budget friendly than many NYC surrounding areas
• Strong museums, music spaces and performance venues
• Global dining with depth and variety
• Active festival and community event scene
Jersey City

Many people know Jersey City for skyline views and the Hudson waterfront, but residents stay because of the lifestyle. It’s walkable, social and easy to navigate. PATH and ferry access make commuting easy, yet many residents remain local because there is enough here already. Restaurants, nightlife and small businesses stay busy. Liberty State Park opens up the landscape, and every neighborhood carries their own feel.
Why people choose Jersey City
• Urban lifestyle with room to roam
• Quick access to NYC when needed
• Restaurants, cafes and local spots with real variety
• Waterfront parks and open green space
Paterson

Paterson earned a place on Livability’s list for accessibility and cost, but also for its sense of history. Old mills, brick buildings and the Great Falls give the city texture that feels distinctly New Jersey. NJ Transit connects Paterson to New York and surrounding towns, but you can live here comfortably without leaving. Food, markets and neighborhoods reflect many cultures and the city feels lived in rather than manufactured.
Why people choose Paterson
• Lower cost of living than many NYC area cities
• National park and historic architecture
• Rail and bus access for commuting
• Distinct food culture and diverse communities
