Alternatives to Watching Super Bowl 2014

Lauren Scrudato

If you can’t wait for all this hype about Super Bowl 2014 at MetLife to be over with, we have some alternatives to help you completely avoid the big game this Sunday.

The Walking Dead’s Zombie Bowl.

AMC will be airing seasons 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead beginning at 10 a.m. on Super Bowl Sunday and continuing until Monday, Feb. 3. If humans decking other humans isn’t violent enough for you, the first two seasons of The Walking Dead will show plenty of bloody human vs. zombie battles. Plus the marathon will get you hooked on the show before new episodes air next Sunday.

National Geographic Wild’s Fish Bowl.

If you need to have more of a zen atmosphere on Sunday, Nat Geo Wild is introducing its first Fish Bowl from 6-10p.m. The entire four hours of airtime will be devoted to witnessing a day in the life of Goldie the Goldfish. It may not be the most thrilling alternative television program, but University of Pennsylvania researchers say that watching fish swim reduces stress and may lower blood pressure. And you can always switch back and forth between the Fish Bowl and the Puppy Bowl

Throw an unrelated party.

If you can find a group of fellow anti-Super Bowl friends, invite them over and avoid anything to do with the Super Bowl. Offer healthier snacks than those typically given during Super Bowl parties and break the ice by playing card games that can be incorporated into drinking games like Apples to Apples or Cards Against Humanity.

Dine out.

Restaurants that are normally packed every day of the week will be virtually empty on Super Bowl Sunday, so take the opportunity to dine at that one place you’ve been dying to try for months. You’ll feel like you have the whole place to yourself, and despite not caring about the Super Bowl, you may still benefit from some game day specials.

Go shopping.

If you’ve exhausted all your “I need to go shopping” excuses, Super Bowl Sunday is the perfect new reason for retail therapy. Escape the noise and mess of your family’s Super Bowl party for a few hours to update your wardrobe.

Workout.

While everyone else you know is stuffing their face with wings and beer, you’ll feel like you one-upped all of them by getting a solid workout. And just like all the local restaurants, gyms will be absent of any life on Sunday.

Take a day of rest.

The Chilltown Craft Beer Festival is being held at the Culinary Conference Center in Jersey City the day before the Super Bowl. Instead of drinking all day Sunday, leaving you with a hangover for work Monday morning, get all your weekend drinking done on Saturday. There are two sessions during the day, from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. and again at 7p.m. – 10 p.m. and proceeds will go towards Visiting Homemaker Service of Hudson County Child Abuse Prevention. Nurse your hangover the proper way Sunday and just sleep the Super Bowl away. Purchase tickets here.
