Arctic air is expected to bring some of the coldest temperatures of the season to New Jersey in the coming weeks, with a chance of snow on the horizon.
A potential winter storm system is being monitored for this weekend, though how much snow—if any—remains uncertain. According to forecasters, temperatures on Saturday are expected to reach the 40s, supporting rain. However, a strong Arctic front moving through Sunday could cause temperatures to drop, allowing snow to develop if sufficient moisture lingers.
The National Weather Service warns of a sharp cold snap next week. By Monday night, temperatures across the region could dip 15 to 20 degrees below normal, with daytime highs near 20 degrees and nighttime lows in the single digits. These frigid conditions could lead to freezing pipes and high energy demand for heating.
Forecasters are also looking at a developing storm system in the eastern U.S. this weekend, which could bring a mix of rain and snow depending on its track. AccuWeather meteorologist Bernie Rayno noted that the storm’s intensity and trajectory will determine where snow may accumulate.
“If the storm strengthens quickly and takes a northern route, it could result in significant snow from the Midwest to the interior Northeast,” Rayno said. Conversely, a weaker storm on a southern track would likely produce less snow.
Private forecaster Steven DiMartino of NY NJ PA Weather highlighted that ongoing cold air patterns linked to the polar vortex are critical for snow formation. While a strong upper low near Quebec is currently limiting moisture, DiMartino said a shift in its position could allow more storm systems to reach the Mid-Atlantic.
DiMartino emphasized that winter is far from over, adding, “If you think we’re done with cold and snow, the data says otherwise.”
AccuWeather predicts a stormy period later in January, with Arctic air and potential storm systems converging to create wintry conditions through the end of the month.
