The NHL Department of Player Safety announced a hearing for New Jersey Devils forward Timo Meier following a cross-checking incident in a game against the Nashville Predators.
The incident occurred during the third period of New Jersey’s 5-2 victory when Meier delivered a pair of cross-checks to Predators rookie Zach L’Heureux. The first struck L’Heureux’s chest, while the second hit him in the face, drawing blood and forcing him to exit the game.
Meier was assessed a major penalty for cross-checking and a game misconduct. The play led to a heated scrum on the ice as L’Heureux, visibly injured, crawled away from the altercation. Officials reviewed the penalty before confirming the ejection.
Earlier in the game, L’Heureux scored Nashville’s second goal. The 19-year-old has recorded five points in 17 games during his rookie campaign.
Meier, who contributed an assist and five shots in the win, has tallied 15 points in 24 games this season. The Devils, riding a three-game winning streak, lead the Metropolitan Division with a 15-7-2 record.
A suspension remains a possibility pending the outcome of the hearing. New Jersey faces the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday.
