Flemington is a quaint, hidden borough surrounded by Raritan Township. As a part of Hunterdon County, this area offers many historical attractions that tourists can enjoy. This western part of NJ was originally established in the 1700s and historical sources state that the Lenape tribe had lived there.

Located by Route US-202, Flemington is home to the world’s largest miniature wonderland: Northlandz. Founder Bruce William began building railroad-inspired designs 35 years ago. Now, currently there is a total of over 100 trains running on eight miles of track. Northlandz has not only grabbed the attention of the residents in Flemington, but even made international headlines. You even have the chance to go on an actual full-sized outdoor train ride that goes through tunnels and bridges just like the miniature displays.
This place is family-friendly and allows people of all ages to enjoy the art of miniature train displays. There are different prices and ticket packages to choose from if you plan on visiting Northlandz. Although, something to take note is that the outdoor train ride needs to be purchased separately. Enjoy a Drink at Skunktown Distillery
If you are looking for something low-key, you can stop by this hidden Flemington gem. Skunktown Distillery hosts special tours for visitors to check out their entire location. Afterwards, you are invited to enjoy some of the distillery’s signature drinks. In addition, their menu is is continuously updated to feature seasonal drinks. The Skunktown Distillery is open on Fridays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
They invite you to bring in your very own food to accompany your drink. This distillery is a great place to wind down with some friends and family. Moreover, you can also book birthday parties and other special events. More information is available on their website.
Have a Shopping Day at Liberty Outlet
Liberty Outlet is one of the few shopping centers located in Flemington. This outlet includes stores like Ann Taylor, Calvin Klein, Nautica, Tommy Hilfiger, J.Crew and Timberland. Even though it isn’t a full-out mall, this outlet has discounts starting at 25 percent to 65 percent off these big-name stores.
Grab a Bite at Flemington’s Local Restaurants
No road trip is complete without getting either something to eat at your destination’s nearby restaurants. Flemington is known to have a variety of restaurants to satisfy your cravings. A top pick in this NJ borough is Joe’s Pizza with a four-and-a-half star review given by Slice Life.
If you want to enjoy the taste of food cooked on a wood fired grill, there is Matt’s Red Rooster Grill. There are many different dishes to choose from: ribs, seafood, fresh cut steak, and chicken to name a few. The owner, manager and chef of the restaurant, Matt McPherson is praised for his culinary background and devotion to creating authentic dishes.
For any early birds out there, Theresa’s Cafe offers a variety of breakfast and lunch inspired dishes. A second option could be Hardy’s Coffee Bar that features specially crafted coffee, fresh baked goods and savory meals.
Get a Glimpse of History at Fleming House Museum & Gardens
In a way to conserve Flemington’s history, the Fleming House Museum & Gardens is open to visitors curious to learn more about the borough’s past. Samuel Fleming, who migrated from Ireland to New Jersey, built this house in 1756. The website says that they provide “guided tours, historically accurate displays, educational programs, museum events, as well as participation in community events” in a way to honor Flemington’s early history.
Also, you can get a glimpse of the garden from inside of the house. Both the museum and gardens are open to host your next party or event. The gardens have six picnic tables for your guests and it also has a parking lot. They take reservations by their phone number that’s listed on their site.
