Liberty Savings to award $500 scholarship to one student from every high school in Hudson County.

Jersey City’s Liberty Savings Federal Credit Union is no stranger to the financial demands of higher education. Founded by former Jersey City educators, the beloved credit union is always searching for new ways to support students within the community and help them achieve their educational goals.

With college costs increasing – from tuition to textbooks – Liberty Savings wanted to alleviate some of the financial strain that comes with the pursuit of higher learning. In celebration of that pursuit, the credit union will be awarding a $500 scholarship to one senior student in each Hudson County high school.

“We’ve been committed to the success of Hudson County ever since we were founded in 1951 by two Jersey City public school system employees,” said Maria Solorzano, Liberty Savings President/CEO. “This is the latest example of how we help our community grow and thrive.”

Finding the funds to pay for college puts unnecessary stress on students across the country. Aside from exorbitant tuition costs, mandatory fees like textbooks, technology, and room and board quickly pile up, causing many students to lose focus on their studies in order to work. “College is a time of growth and tremendous opportunity, but it also brings along many new challenges,” said Solorzano. “The choice between acing your classes and paying your bills shouldn’t have to be one of them.”

Students interested in applying for the scholarship can visit Liberty Savings’ website to learn more and download the application form. All applicants must have their completed forms and transcripts sent in by June 1st for consideration.

Liberty Savings’ new scholarship is a prime example of why credit unions are such valuable community institutions. They offer members consistent support, no matter their age, and provide tools necessary for creating healthy financial habits.

For 69 years, Liberty Savings has thrived by keeping a sense of community at its core. In addition to scholarships, their range of programs, products, and deals offer personalized care and exceptional customer support – not only in their physical branches but also online and over the phone. For example, Loans By Phone, a dedicated lending department, connects members directly with a loan officer to address any financial questions, help members navigate their loan options, and let them conveniently apply right over the phone – no need to even leave the house.

These services and products are helping members better manage their finances, like debt consolidation. By combining multiple high-interest debts – such as college tuition – into one lower monthly payment, managing debt is much simpler and can allow for less interest each month. Members can also receive a low-rate Visa Rewards Card, which earns them one reward point for every dollar transferred.

If someone’s searching for a low mortgage rate, credit unions like Liberty Savings are the perfect places to look. Whether it’s a first-time homebuyer or a family moving on to their next, Liberty Savings offers competitive rates and products that are designed to meet members’ unique budgetary needs.

Membership in Liberty Savings is available to everyone who lives, works, or worships in Hudson County. To learn more, stop by a branch or visit www.LFSCU.org.
