Opening in mid-April, a New Jersey farm will soon allow guests to wander through seemingly endless colorful fields holding millions of tulip flowers. The highly popular Holland Ridge Farms in Cream Ridge offers a unique outdoor experience that’s great for picnics, family trips and especially Instagram posts. Among the plethora of activities available, tulips can be picked unlimitedly for just $1 per stem.
While tickets are not currently for sale, as soon as an opening date is finalized, they will be available for purchase through the Holland Ridge website. Their goal is to open the second week of April, but ultimately the erratic spring weather will decide if the farm opens earlier or later than that. This year, tickets will only be available online and the prices range from $8 to $12 depending on age.
The best way to create memories out of the aesthetics of the land is to go on a photo shoot. It’s a great place to take family or couple photos that scream “spring is here.” Some people even bring a professional photographer to the farm with them to make the most out of the ultra colorful photo-ops. The stunning views make it no surprise that their Instagram page has over 30,000 followers.
Tickets into the park give visitors many more options for activities than just flower picking. There’s a free hayride that takes you on scenic routes around the farm displaying its beauty, food trucks and their Bakery Farm for refreshments along with pony rides and a petting zoo on the weekends. Another unique amenity they added last year is “Bring Your Own Picnic.” They encourage visitors to bring their own food and picnic supplies to camp out right among the tulips.
Holland Ridge Farms is owned by the Jansen family who started growing tulips over 100 years ago in Holland. After immigrating to the United States in 1964, Casey Jansen Sr. started Holland Greenhouses Inc. where he used tulip bulb planting techniques passed down from his family’s tradition. Today, the company still operates as it always has, a wholesale growing company that ships millions of tulips across the entire East Coast.
In 2017, the family planted over one million tulips in order to open their gates to the public for the first time in the following spring. The public response was overwhelmingly positive as tens of thousands of guests came to see the colorful flower fields and even more in the following years. The tremendous success even prompted the family to open a sunflower picking field to the public in the fall seasons (September through October).
This time of year in New Jersey is when people search for any excuse to get outside and enjoy the nice weather, and this is especially true this year given the harsh winter the state just endured. The history, atmosphere and sheer size make this day-trip worthwhile, which is why people travel from all over the state and country to visit. With no other place in the state having tulips fields this big, Holland Ridge is truly a must-see.
