NJ Authorities Search For Escaped Inmate in Newark

Staff

Authorities are searching for a 25-year-old registered sex offender who escaped from a New Jersey Department of Health transport van last week.

Nicholas Voutsas fled around 9 a.m. Thursday near University Hospital in Newark. He was not restrained at the time. Law enforcement officials have charged him with escape and are urging the public to provide any information on his whereabouts.

Voutsas, a Level 2 registered sex offender, was last seen near South Orange Avenue and Bergen Street. He was wearing a black-and-green winter jacket, dark blue pants, and black Velcro-closure sneakers. Officials describe him as approximately 6 feet tall and 260 pounds.

Authorities have not disclosed details of Voutsas’ prior offenses, but his classification indicates a moderate risk of reoffending. Under state law, schools and daycares near his registered address receive notifications about his residence.

The New Jersey State Police Fugitive Unit is leading the search.

Officials urge anyone with information to call 1-800-437-7839 or email [email protected].
