Though New Jersey isn’t typically thought of as a fall oasis, those of us who live here know there’s plenty of natural beauty to be seen. That’s especially true when autumn colors arrive.
New Jersey’s fall foliage season is expected to follow a familiar pattern in 2026, with peak color arriving in typical fashion for the Mid-Atlantic region, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. For much of the state, that peak season is arriving right now.
In line with historical patterns, the best leaf-peeping nationwide typically begins in late September across northern states and higher elevations, then moves south through October and into early November. New Jersey falls within the Mid-Atlantic region, where peak color typically arrives mid- to late October.
Even in a typical year, weather has the final say. Temperature, rainfall, and early frosts can shift peak color by several days and influence just how vibrant the display becomes.
When Will Leaves Change in New Jersey?
Peak fall foliage in New Jersey is expected to run from October 16 through October 30, 2026 across much of the state, with color moving from the northwest mountains down to the southern and coastal regions, according to the New Jersey 2026 Fall Foliage Map. That means there’s no better time than now to seek out those fall sights.
Here’s the expected timing by region:
- Northwest and high elevations (Sussex, Warren, Morris, Passaic, Bergen, Hunterdon): at or near peak around October 17 to 26.
- Central region (Essex, Union, Somerset, Middlesex, Mercer, Burlington): peaking through mid-to-late October.
- South Jersey and the Shore (Cumberland, Cape May, Pine Barrens): peaks latest, around November 6 to 8.
Orange-and-red displays typically last about a week in any one location, though weather can shorten the window. Deciduous trees such as oak, birch, beech, and maple reveal their hidden pigments as chlorophyll fades.
Cool, dry conditions tend to produce a more vivid and longer-lasting show.
