The deadline for obtaining a REAL ID is May 7, requiring travelers to present the upgraded identification or an alternative, such as a passport, to board domestic flights. State agencies in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware have provided guidelines to assist residents in securing the required documents.
REAL ID Requirements by State
New Jersey
The state follows a 2+1+6 documentation system, requiring two proofs of your residency, one proof of Social Security number, and six identification points. A birth certificate or passport counts for four points, while other forms, such as a driver’s license or tax documents, contribute additional points. Residents must use the online tool to confirm eligibility and present documents in person.

Pennsylvania
PA residents must present a birth certificate or valid passport as proof of identity, along with a Social Security number. Two documents verifying legal residence, such as a driver’s license or utility bill, are also required. Individuals with a name change must provide certified documentation. Pennsylvania does not allow pre-submission of documents, requiring applicants to bring all materials in person to a Driver Licensing Center.

Delaware

REAL ID Implementation and Expanded Access
REAL ID enforcement was initially set for 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After multiple delays, the final deadline is now May 7, 2025.
New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission is increasing appointment availability in response to heightened demand. Starting March 20, NJMVC will introduce “REAL ID Thursdays,” adding nearly 4,500 appointments weekly at licensing centers. Appointments for these sessions will open on March 14 via the NJMVC website. Additionally, mobile unit events on select Saturdays aim to expand access even further.
REAL IDs cost $35 in New Jersey, while standard licenses remain $24. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) urges travelers to secure their REAL ID before the deadline to ensure compliance with federal regulations.
After May 7, standard licenses will remain valid for driving and age verification but will not be accepted for domestic air travel or entry into federal facilities. Alternative forms of identification, including military IDs and Enhanced Driver’s Licenses from select states, will also be accepted.
