As a massive, 13,500-acre wildfire ravages parts of New Jersey, NJ officials have charged the man alleged to be responsible with arson.

Authorities state that a Waretown resident failed to properly extinguish a fire made from wood pellets, causing it to quickly spread within the Pine Barrens. The fire, which is now reportedly 50% contained, spread 23-square miles since igniting on Tuesday.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer and Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn LaTourette have stated that the 19-year old man is charged with aggravated arson for his role in starting the fire.

The fire has caused a significant drop in air quality in the towns immediately surrounding the area, with thick clouds of smoke still lingering as the fire is expected to burn until rain comes later this week.

North Jersey, New York City, Rockland County, Westchester County and parts of Long Island are reporting above-average air pollution levels following the fire.
