A new national ranking shows you don’t need a bustling city skyline to find serious money. In fact, one of the wealthiest small towns in the entire United States is tucked away in the Garden State, and it might not be the place you’d expect.

How the Ranking Was Determined

The financial analysis on GOBankingRates recently examined U.S. Census Bureau data to identify the richest small town in every state, focusing on communities with between 500 and 15,000 households. From there, they ranked the winners on a national scale. New Jersey’s top contender didn’t just make the list — it secured the six spot across the country, according to MSN’s coverage of the study.

Lyons, New Jersey

The title goes to Lyons, an unincorporated community within Bernards Township in Somerset County. With a jaw-dropping median household income of over $245,00, Lyons stands out as one of the most affluent enclaves in America.

Rich in history as well as wealth, the area takes its name from the David Lyon farm, which once dominated much of the local landscape. Today, it’s a quiet, residential community that serves as a reminder that significant wealth doesn’t always reside in flashy, high-profile cities.

The study highlights a growing truth, some of the most prosperous places in the U.S. are far removed from the hustle of major urban centers. Lyons is proof that small-town life and big-time affluence can go hand in hand.
