According to a recent analysis by Stacker, Ho-Ho-Kus, a small borough in Bergen County, is the richest town in New Jersey. The report cites U.S. Census Bureau data, including the American Community Survey over five years, to rank towns based on factors like median household income, unemployment rates, and poverty levels.

With a median household income above $250,000, Ho-Ho-Kus stands far above the national median of $75,149. Census data caps income reporting at $250,000, so real earnings are most likely higher. The town also boasts a 0% poverty rate, compared to the national average of 12.5% and New Jersey’s 9.7%.

The median earnings for men in the borough are reported at $250,000, while women earn $105,769 on average. Unemployment in the area is low at 2%, and all residents are reported to have health insurance coverage.

What Sets Ho-Ho-Kus Apart?

Just 20 miles from New York City, Ho-Ho-Kus offers small-town charm while still offering quick access to metropolitan amenities. The town is known for its low tax rates and high bond rating, making it a desirable place to live. The borough covers just 1.7 square miles and features historic homes, a bustling downtown, and easy access to the rest of NJ and NY via Route 17.

Ho-Ho-Kus has been recognized as one of the best places to live in the state for many of these reasons. Despite a drop in its ranking in 2019, the town remains affluent, with a median home price north of $1 million. Current listings show home prices ranging from $1.2 million to $3.7 million.
