The Basics of an Advertorial

Lizzy Dillon

Editorial: an opinion piece written by the senior editorial staff or publisher of a newspaper or magazine.

Advertisement: something that is shown or presented to the public to help sell a product or to make an announcement.

“Advertorial” is a term we use to describe a magazine page that is paid for like an advertisement but written more in the form of an editorial piece. We do this so the reader can truly gain knowledge on a topic or brand. The style of writing is geared towards the reader so they are not bogged down with advertisements but are still being subjected to brand information.

Like an advertisement, the advertorial still has a headline and/or sub-headline. We include anywhere from 50 – 250 words and also add images that will capture the audiences attention. In this particular ad we used a main photo and then an inset photo, which basically just means a photo within another photo. Advertorials must ALWAYS have a call to action (phone number, address, email etc.) this way if the ad is appealing it will help guide the reader to making the next step and furthermore leading to a sale!
