The Haunted History of New Jersey’s Absecon Lighthouse

Alondra Cabrera

As Halloween approaches, the air grows crisp, and tales of the supernatural emerge, reminding us that New Jersey is rich with ghost stories. Few places encapsulate this eerie blend of history and mystery quite like Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City. Standing tall at 171 feet, it ranks as New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse and the third-tallest masonry lighthouse in the United States. This historic structure serves as a landmark and holds the stories of those who came before us.

The lighthouse’s story unfolds in tragedy. In 1854, the Powhatan ship departed from France, filled with 311 people. It met its doom during a ferocious three-day nor’easter. All passengers died, and their bodies washed ashore along Atlantic City’s beaches. This devastation prompted local advocate Jonathan Pitney to push for the construction of a lighthouse, aiming to save sailors from the treacherous waters of what became known as Graveyard Inlet.

Since its completion in 1857, Absecon Lighthouse has stood tall, guiding sailors and reminding them of the dangers hidden beneath the waves. Visitors can climb its winding staircase to the top for breathtaking views of the Atlantic City skyline and the sea that once claimed so many lives. But the lighthouse is more than just a historical monument; it also serves as a hotspot for paranormal activity.

Absecon Lighthouse

Absecon Lighthouse has earned a reputation for being extremely haunted. It attracts ghost hunters and the most daring visitors seeking to uncover its mysteries. Many report strange occurrences, from unexplained whispers to the sound of children giggling in the tower. Local lore suggests that the spirits of the sailors who lost their lives in the Powhatan wreck linger nearby. As well as the souls of the lighthouse keepers who dedicated their lives to ensuring safe passage.

The New Jersey Paranormal Research Organization explored the lighthouse, equipped with electronic voice recorders. They happened to capture uncanny sounds of unseen forces. Among the chilling evidence, they recorded a female voice responding to a query with, “I like you.” Investigators also reported seeing an apparition of a set of legs descending the staircase, only to find no one there. These experiences strengthen the belief that this historic lighthouse is filled with memories and perhaps something more.

Visitors shouldn’t shy away from tales of hauntings. Instead, they should embrace the chance to learn about the lighthouse’s rich history. Throughout October, Absecon Lighthouse hosts special events that delve into its haunted history. They invite guests to engage with the myths and legends surrounding this iconic site.
