Clear ocean water isn’t what most people picture when they think of New Jersey’s beaches. However, one location along the southern coast offers water clarity that surprises many visitors.

Stone Harbor, NJ

The beach with the clearest water sits at 96th Street Beach in Stone Harbor, Cape May County, according to OnlyInYourState.com. The town has fewer than 1,000 full-time residents, but its population rises sharply in summer as tourists from nearby states and Canada come to enjoy the quieter shoreline and clean surf.

Unlike many Jersey Shore destinations, this beach has no boardwalk or carnival attractions. Instead, visitors appreciate calm waters and natural surroundings. Nearby, a bird sanctuary holds national landmark status, and a local museum preserves the area’s history through a large collection of artifacts.

The area offers recreational activities including swimming, fishing, sailing, surfing, shell collecting, tennis, and volleyball. Seasonal events, such as art and craft shows, provide additional options for entertainment during the summer months.

Water quality is a key factor that draws visitors to Stone Harbor. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, New Jersey maintains some of the cleanest beach water in the country. Over the last five years, 35 beaches statewide met federal water quality standards 98 percent of the time. Other beaches with strong water quality include Avalon, Sea Isle City, Wildwood Crest, Margate, Upper Township, and Point Pleasant.

Stone Harbor’s beach offers a quieter alternative to more crowded Jersey Shore towns. Its clear water, plenty of outdoor activities, and relaxed small-town vibe draw families and visitors who want a calm spot by the shore.
