A massive portal bridge spanning across the Hackensack River in Kearny is set to finish in mid 2026.

The much-needed bridge was approved to replace its 114-year-old counterpart over the same river that has been the cause of many of the NJ Transit and Amtrak delays over the last decade.

Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner has stated that the bridge is roughly 80% of the way through construction. The project costs $2.3 billion.

The bridge’s distinct three-span archway design could be seen being placed over the river last month. It is a crucial piece of infrastructure, carrying the busy Northeast Corridor Line over the river, connecting each side by rail. The completed construction is expected to benefit all rail commuters in New Jersey.

2026 remains the target for completion.
