A wildfire spanning 150 acres is burning in Gloucester County, New Jersey, putting several buildings — including an elementary school — at risk.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service first reported the fire, known as the “Scotland Run Wildfire,” on Wednesday, March 13, 2025. It broke out near Pennsylvania Avenue and Proposed Avenue in Franklin Township.

By the morning of Thursday, March 14, fire officials said the blaze was about 50% contained but still threatened at least 20 structures. Initially, around 60 buildings were in danger, but thanks to the efforts of firefighters — including local volunteers — progress has been made in protecting the area.

Crews from the New Jersey Forest Fire Service remain on the scene with fire engines, bulldozers, and ground teams working to control the flames. Meanwhile, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection plans to hold a press conference at 1:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss wildfire season and ongoing drought conditions, following one of the state’s most active wildfire seasons on record.

So far in 2025, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service has responded to more than 350 wildfires statewide.

The cause of the Scotland Run Wildfire is still under investigation.
