A 2.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Paramus on Friday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake, recorded at 1:02 p.m., had a depth of 7.7 kilometers (4.7 miles).
More than 330 residents reported feeling light tremors to the USGS. The quake’s effects were noted in areas as far as Boonton, 19 miles from the epicenter, and parts of New York, including the Bronx and Yonkers.
Local authorities, including Bergen County’s Office of Emergency Management, confirmed the seismic activity, stating, “No reports of serious damage have been received at this time.” Emergency services advised residents to reserve 911 calls for urgent matters.
The region experienced a notable 4.8-magnitude earthquake last April, which was felt as far as Boston and Philadelphia. That event, followed by a series of aftershocks, raised concerns among researchers due to its unexpectedly widespread impact.
While minor quakes are not uncommon in northern New Jersey, seismic experts continue to study the area’s activity to assess potential future risks.
