Bald Eagle Officially Named Official Bird of US After 250 Years

President Joe Biden on Tuesday signed legislation officially designating the bald eagle as the national bird of the United States. It comes after nearly 250 years since becoming a symbol of American freedom.

The bald eagle has appeared on the Great Seal of the United States since 1782, symbolizing American strength, freedom, and independence. However, despite its prominent role in national imagery, it had not previously been formally recognized as the national bird by law.

The legislation, passed by Congress, rectifies this long-standing omission.

The bald eagle, with its distinctive white head, yellow beak, and brown body, is a powerful symbol of American resilience. After facing near extinction in the mid-20th century due to habitat loss and pesticide use, the species has made a remarkable comeback thanks to conservation efforts.

The bald eagle remains protected under federal law.
